I limped heavily all the way over the hill to the nearest church (just before they shut their doors for the day) and sat by the alter waiting for the care taker to enter so that I could demand the immediate attention of the priest; who upon his arrival said "this better be urgent...", but stopped suddenly in shock half way through his sentence, after noticing the size of the swell around my ankles and the black-blue bruising caused by internal bleeding on my foot. I remained seated while explaining the ordeal to him, relieved to have the weight of my body off my injured foot. He could not believe that the MSIDA police denied me a police report (so that there was nothing on record...) and equally shocked, when he heard that the local hospital refused to x-ray the injury (to keep medical records clean).
Without hesitation, he made a quick phone call in Maltese tounge, and within a few minutes the man he was on the phone to, comes racing into the church with a military first aid kit in his hand. He was a retired medic with the Maltese Military Services. As soon as he saw my foot (and without even needing to touch it) he said, "it's broken, you can see it, didn't they tell you that?" and continued in disbelief, "what the he'll is wrong with these people, it's not like you can break your own foot and make it look like that!" I replied, "they're calling me crazy, they want to put me in a psych-ward" and he replied, "that the oldest trick in the book with these authorities but nothing more than a silencing tactic, Malta operates on a system of who you know and unfortunately nobody knows you"; he continued sincerely, "if they really believed you're crazy they would have detained you there and then, for they had a perfect opportunity to do it, without even going to the trouble of calling upon the local police for assistance because you went to them... but then they'd have to explain themselves to judge in court... what they were really doing was covering their asses."
He bandaged my foot after trying to crack it back into place so that the fine bones are aligned, which was extremely painful but I managed to tolerated it using the same breathing exercises taught in childbirth. He also offered to organise pain relief pills for the following day but I blatantly refused to put anything foreign into my body. Then he said, "do you want alcohol instead, it used to work in the military when we ran out of pain relief?" "Absolutely not" I said with conviction. So he concluded, "answering to the slander your husband's been spreading, if you were really a drug addict or even a dealer, you would have accepted my offer for the pain relief pills even if you didn't want to use them yourself, you're too good for him that's the real problem and he probably envies you too."
I limped into the court house the very next day demanding in formal communication, co-signed by the priest from the Catholic Church who called on assistance, an emergency hearing against my husband, with an immediate REQUEST for a restraining order to defend against his 3rd party assailants and in response, I was told by a legal aid representative, someone fresh out of university (who was not permitted to represent my case) that such an order does not exsist in Malta.
Then I asked "well then, how does Malta, protect women and children of Domestic Violence?" ...and this pathetic excuse for a lawyer said without a care in the world, "they don't", and that's all she had to say, a woman in her early thirties boasting two degrees with the local university. I looked her right in the eye with a firm tone of voice, as if I was disciplining her ignorance, and said "you disgust me, gosh even I, in this compromised position, can do a better job than you, you should quit while you're ahead and I'm going to report you on a complaint to European Courts of Human Rights!"
The following day I reiterated the communication back to the priest of the same Catholic Church (and carbon copied the documentation addressed to the courts that I compiled on burrowed resources, to the Justice Minister of Malta, Mr Owen Bonnici, who was dumb-founded by the courts lack of action); the priest agreed to recieve my mail/legal CORRESPONDENCE and offered the use of his fully equipped Church Office to forward my formal complaints to the European Courts of Human Rights, that highlighted the individual section and sub-sections breached by both medical staff and the Msida Police; The document was approved by the Justice Minister of Malta, for administration purposes, who added, "it's very well written..."; the European Courts of Human Rights, replied with a letter that read "...we regret to inform you that your complaint does not fall under our jurisdiction..."
After viewing my CORRESPONDENCE from the European Courts of Human Rights, the priest said "welcome to the European Union!!!"
